Fuel for the future
Hydrogen
Hydrogen offers all the prerequisites for sustainably reducing CO2 emissions in road traffic and supporting the intentions of the energy transition. In Switzerland, mobility in a closed water cycle has been operating successfully as a globally recognized solution since November 2016.
The member companies of the AVIA Association want to build up a network of H2 filling stations in Switzerland in the long term. AVIA member companies currently operate six H2 filling stations.

In the proven AVIA tradition, AVIA member companies are also making their contribution to innovation in this area and are involved in the production of green hydrogen.
Hydrogen vehicles are just as emission-free in operation as electric cars with rechargeable batteries – and just as quiet. However, they are ahead in terms of production: fuel cells can be manufactured in a much more environmentally friendly way than rechargeable batteries.
In contrast to conventional electric cars, however, the electricity for the drive is not supplied by batteries, but is generated by a hydrogen-powered Fuel cell in the vehicle itself: in the so-called «stacks» of the Fuel cell, pure hydrogen reacts slowly and in a controlled manner with oxygen to form water.
This «cold combustion» («cold» because there is no flame) produces a direct electric current, water vapor and some heat.
Researchers assume that hydrogen technology will also gain momentum in Switzerland as soon as enough sustainably produced electricity from photovoltaic and wind power plants is available in Switzerland.
